Motoring ahead to better street sweeping

Shiny new street cleaning vehicles will be making a clean sweep in part of Edmonton as part of a drive to improve the quality of cleaning along busy routes.

Enfield Council is spending £93,000 to provide the two new vehicles to mechanically sweep the Bowes Road and Telford Road areas as well as parts of the A406 and the Cockfosters to Southgate Green section of the A111.

This will be an improvement over the traditional use of foot sweepers who will be trained to operate the new machinery. The relatively high percentage of major roads in the area can make it difficult to keep the area clean because of the huge number of people passing through the area every day, residents have also asked if the area can be swept more frequently.

The new sweepers mean that streets can be swept more rapidly and small items of litter would be removed more effectively from the pavements.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: “Residents consistently tell us that clean streets are one of their top priorities and we take our responsibilities to keep our borough tidy very seriously indeed.

“Providing these new sweepers will help to support Enfield Council’s Cleaner Streets Campaign and shows we listen to residents’ concerns and do something about them, as any responsible local authority would.”
