A wide range of events ranging from cycle training to bike checks is being offered as Enfield Council seeks to get more and more people using greener and healthier forms of transport.

The Cycle Enfield Initiative, which kicks off on Saturday 6 April, gives adults and young people over the age of 10, the chance to have free one to one cycle training, take a class in basic cycle maintenance to learn how to fix punctures and keep their bike in good working order or take advantage of a free bike check ups at the monthly Dr Bike sessions in Enfield Town Market.

There will also be fun family cycle rides running from April until October and a project at the Edmonton Unity Youth Hub which gives young people aged 13 - 19 the chance to renovate and refit bikes donated by members of the community.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: "Cycle Enfield seeks to get people off the couch and out of their cars and onto their bikes instead. Riding is a quick, healthy and environmentally friendly way of getting around and Enfield Council is keen to encourage people to pick alternative and more sustainable forms of transport.

"We are working incredibly hard as a Council to make our borough more cycling friendly, by developing a network of Greenway routes. The beauty of cycling is that anyone can do it and that everyone, young and old, can participate at their own pace. It's natural that young children love riding a bike but we want to get as many people as possible back into the saddle and rediscovering the benefits of cycling."

The next free family bike ride provided by Enfield Council will take place on Sunday 14 April and sets out from Edmonton Unity Hub in Craig Park at 10am. The ride will take around two hours with rest/refreshment breaks and a limited number of bikes can be provided on request, it is suitable for families with children and is led by trained instructors.

Dr Bike Sessions will be held in Enfield Town Market on the first Saturday of every month between 10am and 4pm.

Dates are: April 6, May 4, June 1, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 5.

Cycle maintenance classes are held at the main Hall at Enfield Chace Community School on the last Saturday of each month and cost £18

Dates are: April 27, May 25, June 29, July 27, August 31, September 28,  October 26.
