Hundreds of family homes, a library and shops will be built in Ponders End after the Mayor of London granted consent for an Enfield Council outline planning application designed to help rejuvenate the area.

The regeneration of Ponders End High Street, now known as The Electric Quarter, forms part of the Council's £270 million Ponders End regeneration programme which aims to provide high quality homes, jobs and a thriving high street for residents over the next decade.

The Electric Quarter development will see the old police station demolished and part of the high street opened up to improve access through the former Middlesex University site.  Up to 408 new homes will also be built along side employment space.

The project will run alongside a £2 million scheme funded by the Mayor of London designed to improve Ponders End High Street / Queensway and to encourage people to use different ways of getting around.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, Cllr Del Goddard, said: "This is brilliant news for Ponders End and Enfield as a whole. The Electric Quarter proposals aim to open up the high street and ensure it is a vibrant, successful and attractive shopping destination for people living nearby and elsewhere in the borough.

"We want to build a stronger community in Ponders End and part of the way we’re planning to do this is by providing first rate homes and amenities, such as a library that will attract people into the area. Enfield Council is working with its partners to attract investment to the borough so we can improve the borough’s most deprived areas, reduce unemployment, boost the borough’s economy and promote local businesses to the widest possible audiences.

"This is a real shot in the arm for the Enfield economy and we hope it will help to attract significant investment into the borough."

The Electric Quarter is the name of the scheme formerly known as the Ponders End High Street Regeneration Scheme. It has been named The Electric Quarter in honour of the area’s industrial heritage, most notably the work of Joseph Swan who pioneered the electric light bulb in the High Street in the early 20th century.

The Ponders End Central Planning Brief, which set out the Council's vision for the area was adopted in May 2011, and the Council subsequently appointed architects Karakusevic Carson with Maccreanor Lavington and East to work up an Outline Planning Application for the site which was agreed and referred to the GLA on 29 January.  

After the Mayor of London gave the thumbs up to the project on March 27 February, the decision notice was issued on 5 March.
