Enfield Council, Transport for London, Network Rail and local mewmbe have gained approval in principle for a multi million pound rail infrastructure project to improve services from Angel Road Station

As a co-ordinating Council - Enfield is ensuring that all parties are working together in the best interests of local people and businesses to guarantee the investment acts as a driving force to create 18,000 new homes and 21,900 jobs in the Upper Lee Valley .

Enfield Council will now seek to ensure, with its partners, that finance is in place as soon as possible so that the project can begin promptly to drive forward the regeneration of the massive £1.3 billion green econ-development Meridian Water.

Network Rail's decision to include the STAR Line (Stratford - Tottenham Hale - Angel Road) in its Strategic Rail Business Plan, means that the barriers to creating 18,000 new homes and 21,900 jobs in the Upper Lee Valley through the revitalisation of the Lee Valley rail line have been swept away.

It has been calculated that a better rail service could play a significant role in driving growth in the Upper Lee Valley as a whole to provide a massive economic stimulus for north London and drive regeneration projects adding £4.51 billion to the UK economy by 2021.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, Cllr Del Goddard, said: "Enfield Council has played a pivotal role in acquiring millions of pounds of investment in rail infrastructure which will utterly transform the economic landscape in the Upper Lee Valley for decades to come.

"The challenge now is to finish the job and ensure we can successfully lobby for the remaining money needed to provide a four train an hour service to Angel Road .

"The completed improvement scheme is the holy grail of rail upgrades, for a relatively modest outlay we will be able to add billions of pounds to the UK economy, unlock the enormous potential of Meridian Water and create thousands of jobs and homes in the places they are needed most.

"The financial benefits of putting extra rail capacity in place would be enormous and benefit the United Kingdom as a whole at a time when the economy needs all the help it can get and people, jobs and entire communities in the East of Enfield will reap the benefits of a fast, modern and efficient rail service which connects them to Tottenham Hale and the major transport, business and retail hub at Stratford.

”These improvements will also put the Upper Lee Valley at the centre of European development by forging better transport links between the area, Stansted Airport and Stratford International Station.”

Enfield Council estimates that a better local rail service will be in operation by the end of 2017.
