Enfield’s youth elects a new national voice

Published Thursday, 14 February 2013

National elections to the UK Youth Parliament take place this month and young voters in Enfield are gathering at the Dugdale Centre to hear candidates appeal for votes.

Sixteen members of the local Enfield Youth Parliament will be joined by up to 30 young people from Enfield ’s area youth forums to hear passionate appeals for support from the candidates.

The young audience will then be invited to cast their votes to elect four young people – two to serve as Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) for a year, and two deputies (DMYPs).

The newly elected members will have the opportunity to shape the national youth agenda and enjoy a taste of our democracy. They will also be attending the House of Commons.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Enfield ’s Cabinet Member for leisure, culture and youth, will be announcing the results at approximately 3pm.

He said, “This is a great opportunity for our young people to take part in decision making on the national stage.  We have established a process for this important election. It means that Enfield ’s young people can join other young people from across the country and can make their contribution to our national life and representing Enfield ’s youth.”

The election is organised by the Enfield Children’s Trust, a consortium of organisations representing children and young people in Enfield . It is led by Enfield Council.
