During December Enfield Council’s Counter Fraud Team, in partnership with the Enfield Police Payback Team, won the national accolade ‘Fighting Fraud Awards 2012’ which recognised the excellent joint work which had taken place to seize the proceeds of crime from benefit fraudsters.

The awards are for public sector organisations, and recognised the good work, innovation, and best practice being developed and implemented within the public sector to combat and prevent fraud.

The joint Enfield Council and police team picked up the top prize in the sanctions category which was awarded for the success the joint partnership has achieved in using proceeds of crime legislation to recover funds from those people who commit fraud.

The collaboration has also resulted in the training and mentoring of a Counter Fraud Team investigation officer to become a fully accredited financial investigator and the training of another officer.

Cllr Andrew Stafford, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property said “Our fraud investigators are second to none when it comes to tracking down benefit fraudsters.

“More recently, links have been made with the Department of Work and Pensions and also police colleagues to track down fraudsters who commit multiple crimes, and seek them out wherever they are hiding.

“I am delighted that Enfield Council’s work with the Enfield Police Payback Team has won this coveted national award. It is well deserved.”

Ch Supt Jane Johnson, Borough Commander for the Metropolitan Police said “I am delighted that this work has been recognised in this way. The role in tackling fraud in the public sector is not only complex, but relies upon the work of partners to achieve results. Really pleased for all involved."
