Democracy in Action!

Published Tuesday, 18 September 2012

Do you want to know more about democracy?

The Democracy Team in Enfield Council is breaking out of the Civic Centre and coming to a community group or school near you to tell local people how they can get involved in politics or the work of the Council.

The Team, who are experts on local democracy and help Enfield Council fulfil its political functions, are available to give talks to any groups in Enfield, be they schools, youth groups, community groups - indeed anyone at all!

The presentations can cover how the Council and local politics work, how you can get involved, local elections, and Enfield Council itself. Talks can be aimed at those aged 11 and above.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Localism said “Many ordinary people are still mystified about how local government works, what councillors do,  and how they can get involved. It is also disheartening to see how few people turn out to vote on polling day.

“If residents knew more about local democracy, how it worked, and the difference they could make in their borough I believe more would come forward and get involved.

“The Democratic Services Team, who are experts in their field, are willing to go out and give lively and interesting presentations to any community group, school or organisation who would be interested to know more. I do hope they get a huge response as it is vital as many people know about local democracy as possible.”
