Dishes to make the tastebuds tingle

As part of the regular changes to school menus, Enfield Council’s catering service is introducing some tasty international treats for children attending primary schools in the borough.

The new menu includes Turkish, Middle Eastern and Jamaican dishes as well as old favourites. Local parents and children tasted samples and marked each new dish.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for children and young people said, “I am keen that children have a good wholesome midday meal that they enjoy. Some of these traditional dishes they will know from home and they will be encouraged to eat them at school. We will still have the popular dishes and salad bar, but our new dishes will liven up the choices.”

All the new dishes have been researched by the council’s cook supervisors and ingredients have been sourced from local suppliers. The catering service orders fresh farm assured meat and poultry, uses free range eggs and offers varied menus every day over a three week cycle.

Catering manager, Jane Burr, said, “School meals have come a long way in the past few years. Our new recipes will be tasted and developed when we know what our parent and children tasters think of them. If they don’t hit the mark they will not be on our final menu – but we believe that we have created healthy dishes that children will want to eat.

“We will also be testing them at an event in October for primary age children from across the borough. It might mean that we have to refine the dishes so that we get the taste and balance right.”

Council nutritionist, Julia Dowsett, added,  “There are strict guidelines for the preparation of school meals which have to be of a high nutritional standard so our cooks have used authentic recipes, but adapted them within the guidelines.

“Our main aim is to offer real choices that tempt children to have a good midday meal.”

The new dishes are:

Keema Matar, an Indian spiced mincemeat dish

Turlu, Turlu, a Turkish roast and spiced vegetable dish including aubergines and chick peas, served with plain yogurt

Spinach and feta strudel:  Mediterranean mix wrapped in puff pastry

Jamaican lamb patties and Jamaican veggie patties

Baked fish with plantain and spinach – Jamaican style

Besemal Soslu Tavuk: Turkish inspired chicken in a white bechemal sauce topped with mozzarella cheese

Aubergine Ragout : Middle Eastern vegetable dish

Tuscan bean and butternut squash risotto: Italian inspired dish

The new menu will be launched on Monday 5th November at the start of School Meals week.
