Petition for 20 mph zone considered

Published Friday, 24 August 2012

Enfield Council has confirmed it will consider installing a 20 mph zone in a busy road after receiving a 700 signature petition this week.

The petition, calling for a 20mph limit in Hoppers Road and nearby streets was presented to Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, on Thursday (August 23), by Enfield Green Party.

Cllr Bond said: "We'll go away and look at the practicalities of these proposals and see if there is a need to introduce a 20 mph zone or other speed restrictions in the area.

"We're always willing to listen to residents' views and look closely at the issues they raise and this is no exception. We take road safety very seriously and I'm pleased we can work with residents and other political parties to put people's minds at rest where road safety in concerned."

The petition says that a brief survey of the road showed more than half of the 68 vehicles were exceeding the 30 mph speed limit in place.

Since 2012 Enfield Council has introduced a range of 20 mph zones in and around schools in the borough to improve safety for young people and reduce accidents.
