New kitchen is the recipe for tasty hot meals

Published Thursday, 12 July 2012

Children and staff at Chase Side Primary School in Enfield have a new kitchen and dining room and are enjoying freshly cooked meals on site for the first time in its 100 year history.

This project was completed through Enfield Council’s school kitchens and dining room programme.

Headteacher, Sally Quartson, said, “It makes such a difference. Until recently hot meals were delivered to the school from the nearby Enfield County secondary school, but now we can appreciate the value of having a kitchen on site with a dining hall.

“More pupils are eating a hot meal at lunchtimes and it is a pleasure to see them in this relaxed setting which can accommodate them in comfort.”

Before the kitchen and dining hall were installed the school’s meal service used an extremely small servery into the school hall.

This caused considerable upheaval rearranging the hall for PE and other activities.  The new kitchen and dining hall has solved these problems with the dining hall’s added function as a flexible multi use teaching space.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools and children’s services, said, “We are adding more kitchens and dining facilities to our schools and are keen to encourage children to have a good midday meal.

“Enfield Council has a healthy schools policy establishing high nutritional standards in all school meals. I am delighted that we have at last been able to provide excellent cooking facilities at Chase Side.”

From September the school intends to establish a garden project growing vegetables for school meals.
