Children at St John and St James primary school in Edmonton started the Enfield School Torch relay as the Olympic torch arrived in the UK on Friday 18th May.

on Fore Street

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools and children’s services, cut a ribbon and 311 pupils carried their own crafted torches through Edmonton ’s Fore Street to Pymmes Park where they danced and celebrated.

Cllr Orhan, said, "All our schools have entered into the spirit of the Olympics. Over 90 schools across the whole borough – are joining in - that’s at least 55,000 pupils and students. This is a superb way for us to mark the London Olympics and something that our young people will remember."

Schools have been clustered into groups and each leg of the relay will finish at a local park. The relay will stop at nine parks over a two month period ending Friday 13th July at the QE2 Stadium in Donkey Lane , Enfield.

Children will not only carry their decorative torches, but they will also carry the flags of one of the nations that their school has adopted for the occasion.

Wearing sports clothes or national costumes and with painted faces the children will be accompanied by older sports leaders from secondary schools.

Heather Knightley, headteacher at St John & St James, said, "Our classes have been working so hard on their torches and enjoying learning about the Olympics. We have chosen Guyana as our nation. The relay is bringing some excitement, inspiration and fun to the local scene and we were thrilled to be at the start of it in Edmonton."

Enfield Council’s PE team has organised the relay. Team manager, Jan Hickman, said, "The response from all Enfield schools has been terrific and we are looking forward to seeing these torch parades throughout our borough."

At each park there will be a mammoth decorated torch with five smaller decorative torches displayed with ribbons to mark each school taking part. All events start at 1pm and end at 3pm.
