Mice infestation costs £1,074

Published Tuesday, 15 May 2012

An infestation of mice in a Thai restaurant cost the owners £1,074 after Environmental Health Officers visited the premises following a complaint from customers.

Officers from Enfield Council ordered the Joy Buffet, in Sarnesfield Road, Enfield, to close on Thursday (10 May), after they discovered the infestation. They went to Enfield Magistrates Court on Monday (May 14) where magistrates ratified the closure and banned the owner from reopening until the failings identified had been addressed as well as awarding costs.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: "We received a complaint of ants on the premises from a resident but when our environmental health officer turned up to take a look they found appalling conditions in the restaurant.

"Fresh mice droppings were scattered under the cooker and hand basin and there were several places the rodents could have entered to gnaw on open food so we had no option but to close the premises because it posed a major risk to public health".

"We will continue support the majority of well run food businesses in this borough by closing down premises with poor hygiene practices."
