Matt Miller, chair of governors at Highlands School in Winchmore Hill has received this year’s ‘Outstanding Governor’ award

Matt Miller, chair of governors at Highlands School in Winchmore Hill has received this year’s ‘Outstanding Governor’ award at a celebration of all Enfield’s school governors. This comes after his national appointment as a Leader for School Governors.

Matt is one of Enfield’s 1400 governors, part of the largest voluntary body in the country. He has been a governor at Highlands since it opened in September 2000 and is delighted with this latest recognition

He takes Jacqueline Onassis’s famous words about children as his mantra, ‘If you bungle raising your children, I don't think whatever else you do well, matters very much.’

Matt says, “I often think of this because all governors have a desire to make a positive difference to every child. Every child has a life and a future and it is hugely rewarding to help youngsters be the best that they can be not just in terms of academic qualifications but vocational life skills as well.”

He points out, “There is far more to being a governor than attending meetings and musing over policies and data - it is about being part of the school community and working with the Headteacher and staff.

“Governors play a key role in the school team. At Highlands, we helped to drive up standards and the school was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

“Although it is important to take an interest in all school activities I am clear that our role as governors is not about fundraising for the extras. This is a serious job that involves school leadership – from budgets to teacher selection, target setting and school policies, to decisions about the curriculum.

“Schools are exciting places - there is always something going on and it is important that we get a feel for everyday school life. Governors should want to support the relentless drive for improvement in schools and not settle for second best.

“I am very proud to receive the award of Outstanding Governor -it is a fantastic personal honour but also a tribute to the whole school and especially my colleagues on the governing body.

“We are fortunate to support an exceptional headteacher in Bruce Goddard and a staff that can take credit for making Highlands an outstanding school.”

Matt praised last year’s outstanding school governor, Sylvia Hart, from Durants School who presented the award.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools and children’s services, said, “It is school governors like Matt and Sylvia who set the bar high for school governors. It is so reassuring that we have so many excellent school governors willing to support and lead our schools
