Rogue trader fined

A rogue trader has been fined £200 and ordered to pay £500 costs after he was prosecuted by Enfield Council for failing to provide a geographical address for his business.

The sole trader offering a clean and seal driveway service was found guilty of the offence at Enfield Magistrates Court on 23 April.

In April 2010, the trader was working in Enfield and called at a resident's doorsteps offering an immediate service to clean and seal driveways. The work was unsatisfactory with the resident having been falsely promised a weed free drive.

The company failed to provide their consumer with the business’ geographical address and a seven day cooling off notice as required by law, despite previous advice from other trading standards authorities that this was a legal requirement and Enfield Council's Trading Standards Team tracked him down after receiving a complaints from a person living in the borough.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Chris Bond, said: "Our advice is that residents should think twice before buying goods and services on the doorstep. Instead they should go and do some research to satisfy themselves that they will be purchasing a reputable and reliable service or product before handing over any money."

"If an offer sounds to good to be true it probably is, but in the present financial climate when family budgets are squeezed, people want to save money and sometimes make decisions they regret later, our Trading Standards Team are trying to ensure that does not happen."

"This sentence shows how seriously the court takes offences of this nature and should act as a deterrent to companies which feel they can operate outside the law."

Everyone has a right to feel safe in their own homes. Residents should follow these simple steps before letting anyone they don't know into their home:

  • Lock the back door before answering the front door. Bogus callers often work in pairs; while one distracts the homeowner at the front door, the other goes around the back.
  • Always ask to see ID. Check the photo on the identity card against the person at your door.
  • If they do not have any ID or it does not match, do not let them in.
  • If it is not a pre-arranged visit and you are unsure about the caller, ask them to return at a suitable date and time when you have someone with you.
  • If you are still unsure about the caller, contact the appropriate number for assistance, usually the organisation the caller claims to be from.
