Enfield Reclaiming the Streets!

Published Wednesday, 10 August 2011

Enfield Council has launched a campaign designed to reclaim the borough’s streets from the minority who rioted over the weekend.

The Council is calling on residents to go about their daily business and show the world that the borough will not be intimidated by the violence that has caused trouble across London in recent days.

As part of the campaign the Council is setting up a dedicated phone line so residents can anonymously provide evidence to help bring the rioters who struck in Enfield at the weekend to justice.

The borough will also be holding urgent talks with community and business leaders to hear any concerns they may have and make sure they get the support and assistance they need to recover from the events of the past few days.

Enfield Council Leader, Cllr Doug Taylor, said: “The vast majority of Enfield residents utterly condemn the events of the last few days and we are determined to reclaim our streets from those people who wrongly think they can do whatever they want.

“We are launching the Respect for Enfield Campaign to give residents that chance to join forces with the Council to show that our borough is a safe and friendly place in which to live and work.

“We want residents to go about their daily business and support our night time economy, without putting themselves at risk and show there is no place in a civilised society for violence and disorder on our streets.

”We’ve been inundated with requests from residents asking if we want their help in clearing up the borough and this demonstrates the support and strength of feeling demonstrated by normal residents.

"I'd like to pay tribute to all Council staff for their efforts in recent days including our workers who braved the disorder on Sunday night to visit the borough’s most vulnerable people to ensure they received their vital care.

"Also cleaners who worked through the night to clear up and get streets open for business. Enfield Council will continue to provide the high quality services that its residents expect and rely on."
