Meridian Water unveiled
Published Wednesday, 20 July 2011
Plans for the development of one of the largest green developments in the United Kingdom have been unveiled for consultation by Enfield Council.
The Meridian Water development, the key focus of the Mayors recent Local Enterprise Zone proposal, aims to create 5,000 new homes, 3,000 new jobs, three schools, a nursery, doctors' surgery, shops, parks, open spaces, leisure facilities, a police drop in centre and significant improvements to transport links on the 90 hectare site at the heart of the Upper Lee Valley.
As well as playing a major part in regenerating Edmonton and its surrounding areas, the £1.3 billion project aims to be low carbon, becoming one of the main hubs within the proposed North London Decentralised Energy Network.
It will also build on Network Rails' recent proposals for the development of a new rail track through Haringey and Enfield that will improve rail frequencies in the Lee Valley and open up new commuter routes.
Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, Cllr Del Goddard, said: "Meridian Water is a fantastic project that will completely rejuvenate Edmonton and provide thousands of much needed new homes and jobs for Londoners.
"Meridian Water provides a unique opportunity for Edmonton to expand; creating a vibrant new community nestled between the busy commuter hub of Edmonton Green and the peaceful waterways and parklands of the Lee Valley, something no other location in London can offer.
"Meridian Water will be an extremely desirable place to live and the size of the development means it will play a vital role in driving London's growth.
"We are committed to making this one of the greenest developments ever seen in the UK and we will be working extremely closely with developers to make Meridian Water a low carbon, ecologically responsible community that is a desirable place for people to live, work and play."
Residents and businesses will have the opportunity to comment on the plans for Meridian Water from Monday the 25th of July until Monday the 5th of September.
Their comments and suggestions on the proposals will be incorporated in to a revised vision for the area which the Council will then formally consult on later in the year, ready for adoption and delivery.
