Cllr Charalambous goes for broke to fight poverty

Published Thursday, 28 April 2011

Between the 2nd and 6th May if you see a figure approach and ask you to dig deep for a good cause it may well be Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, as he vows to live on £1 a day to mirror those in the poorest countries in the world.

He will be doing this to highlight the fact that over 1.4 billion people live on less than we would pay for a cup of coffee to raise money for a charity called Positive Women, which helps to raise funds to support orphaned and vulnerable children in parts of rural Southern Africa.

Cllr Charalambous said "I plan to live off the following for five days and nothing else: 1kg of rice, 500g porridge oats, one loaf of white bread, 250g of butter, 10 slices of cheese, one large tomato, three tins of peas, one tin of sweetcorn, three tins of spaghetti in tomato sauce and 10 vegetable stock cubes. These can all be bought for £4.96 so I am within budget.

"If anyone has better suggestions of how to spend my £5.00 to live for a week I would be delighted to receive them, remember I have to have my breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days out of the £5.00. The only thing I get to consume for free is water. Suggestions can be left at the link below.

"If anyone would like to sponsor me they can go to http://my.livebelowtheline.co.uk/Bambos
I am grateful for any donation however big or small"
