Grovelands Park Evening Bat Walk

Published Thursday, 14 April 2011

At dusk on Friday 29th April as the sun sets, bats take to the skies at Grovelands Park and become visible as they hunt for food. This will be the first chance for visitors on the bat walk to get a closer look at bats.

Friday 29th April - 8.15pm
Meet at Grovelands Park Cafeteria, entrance via Broad Walk, N21
Ends 10.15pm approx - This event is FREE but booking is essential due to overwhelming interest (details below).

In these hushed surroundings and using tracking equipment and high powered torches, the bat group should then be able to illuminate areas of the park where the bats are flying overhead hunting for insects.

Members of the Herts & Middlesex Bat Group will be on hand for this celebration of Enfield's bats to give a brief talk, showing everyone some pictures and demonstrating their special echolocation detecting equipment.

This equipment will be passed around for visitors to try out their tracking skills.  When the equipment emits distinctive sonar bat noises this signals the presence of bats in their immediate area. At this point the bats become visible.

Alan Mitellas, of Enfield's park outreach service, says, "We have arranged this popular event with the experts at the Herts & Middlesex Bat Group. It is always exciting to reveal close up these unusual mammals in the night skies."

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture added, "The last bat walk received an overwhelming number of visitors, so this year people will need to email or ring in quickly to reserve their places on this highly popular event.

"These walks are also fascinating and exciting, so come along and witness first hand these winged wonders as they swoop and soar over Grovelands Park"

It is suggested that anyone coming along should bring a powerful torch if at all possible, but it is not essential. Dogs are not permitted at this event.

Please book by phoning 020 8441 8272, or emailing alan.mitellas@enfield.gov.uk and let us know your name, contact details and the number of persons attending.  If you are sending an email or leaving a recorded message, please wait to receive confirmation!
