Stairway to Heaven as New Jacobean Staircase graces Hall

This week a very important piece of work took place as part of the ongoing renovations at Forty Hall in Enfield, a project which has been made possible with a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of just over £1.8million. The Victorian staircase, thought to have been installed circa 1895 was removed, to be replaced by a replica Jacobean staircase, containing over 6 tonnes of oak.
As well as simply replacing the staircase, it is going to be installed facing in the opposite direction to the way visitors to the Hall will remember it. This is the way that the original owner, Sir Nicholas Rainton would have had it arranged when he built the house in 1629.The removal of the staircase starts from the top down and the new staircase will be rebuilt from the bottom up.
Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said "The current Victorian staircase that was in place was put in during the time of Henry Ferryman Bowles when he bought the house in 1895. At the same time he also installed the stained glass window which is being retained with his family coat of arms, and the coat of arms of other families associated with the Bowles family.
"By putting in this new replica Jacobean staircase we are keeping true to the spirit of the original Hall. The style of this new staircase is as it would have been then, very gothic and heavily carved, with ornate and heavy handrails and newels.
"When finished it will be beautiful."
