Helping People Gain Construction Skills

Published Tuesday, 12 April 2011

Enfield Council is working with Notting Hill Housing Association to provide waged work placements for apprentices working towards construction qualifications.

Notting Hill's award winning Construction Training Initiative (CIT) has places available if you want to train to work in various construction trades including electrical, plumbing, brickwork, carpentry and decorating in Enfield.

Cllr Ahmet Oykener, Cabinet Member for Housing said: "This Initiative brings growth, jobs and opportunity to the borough, giving people in Enfield a chance to help with making Enfield a better place to live.

"There are currently four sites within the borough: North Circular Road, Watermill Lane, Durants Road and Gilbert Street. As these and other sites progress, more opportunities will become available for local residents."

Although the minimum age to work on a construction site is 18, the Construction Training Initiative is open to all ages; trainees can start apprenticeships at 17. The Initiative is open to all with 14% of trainees being women and 52% from Black and Ethnic Minorities.

If you are unemployed, already attending college, or looking to secure a college place you may be interested in the Initiative.

What do trainees receive?
The opportunity to earn as you train
Support towards securing a college place
Support through college to achieve an NVQ
Advice and guidance from trained staff
Financial support towards books, stationery, fees and travelling costs
 Access to a hardship fund
CSCS Health & Safety tests booked and funded
Free set of high quality tools and equipment
A series of high quality work placements
 Bespoke supplementary training

You may be among the 70% of those that obtain the qualifications to go onto a permanent job.
