Fair trade cakes vanish in 15 minutes

At 50p a cake, staff meeting in groups willingly parted with their money. You could say that selling these cakes was a piece of cake.

The six young cooks, aged 12, were raising funds for the Fair Trade Foundation having baked their cakes using Fair Trade bananas, chocolate and sugar.

Fair Trade is a subject that they study at the school and they have been learning how it has expanded over the last few years.

Theresa Ziten, who teaches business studies and Opening Minds, said, "Our year 7 children study a subject called 'Opening Minds', which includes Fair Trade and other global citizenship issues. In this they do a module of study which is called 'It is not Fair' which focuses on Fair Trade, world poverty, child labour and Third World Debt.

"They have shown a very keen interest in all of these issues."

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for schools & children's services added, "It is good to see that our schools are responsive to these wider world issues, but at the same time are giving their pupils an enjoyable learning experience."
