Highmead Planning Consent Granted

Published Friday, 18 February 2011

On Wednesday 16th February planning consent was unanimously granted by the Planning Committee to redevelop Enfield Council’s flagship housing renewal project, Highmead in Edmonton, N18.

The planning consent includes provision of 120 private and affordable properties, 1,092 m2 of retail space on Fore Street and a community building.

Enfield Council's vision for the Highmead site is the delivery of a high quality landmark development that not only acts as a catalyst for change but can attract people to buy into the area and support the local economy to thrive again.

The approval of the planning application was an important milestone towards achieving this vision.

The local community have been widely consulted on the plans and have made a positive contribution to the final design. No objections to the application were received, and one local resident submitted a representation in support of the application.

The new development will replace a tired 1960's tower block as well as a commercial parade.

The Council decided that the Highmead blocks should be redeveloped due to the existing poor condition of the buildings. Contractor Meeres are currently on site undertaking site clearance works and soft stripping the tower block. On 18th February 2011 the Council will begin the process to appoint a developer to build out the plans.

Cllr Doug Taylor, Leader of Enfield Council said "The Planning Committee's approval of the Highmead planning application is excellent news for the people of Edmonton.

"For years the Highmead building has been left to deteriorate and has had a detrimental impact on the lives of residents as well as harming local businesses.

"The new plans for Highmead demonstrate Enfield Council's commitment to architecture of the highest quality, and will deliver much needed new housing, shops and community space"
