Enfield Council's Ten Top Tips For Safe Festive Food

  • Always check the date codes when buying food. Take all chilled & frozen foods home quickly & put them straight in your fridge or freezer
  • Do not overstock your fridge or freezer, or they might not work properly!
  • Always store raw foods like fish, poultry & meat at the bottom of the fridge to stop them dripping onto other foods
  • Defrost frozen turkeys in the fridge for 24-48 hours (depending on weight) & check there is no ice still inside
  •  Always wash your hands after handling raw meat, fish or poultry
  •  Make sure you clean any surfaces or chopping boards used for raw meat, fish or poultry with an anti-bacterial spray after use
  •  Cook turkeys thoroughly. Make sure the meat is white with no pink inside & any juices are clear
  •  Cover & cool leftover food quickly, & put in the fridge or freezer
  •  Use any chilled leftover foods within 48 hours
  •  Re-heated leftover foods must be piping hot & only re-heated once
