Enfield is the place for creativity

Published Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Enfield is going to be an even more exciting borough than it is now with a council plan to engage people of all ages, abilities and skills in culture and the arts. This is ‘Creative Enfield’.

Whether it's making things, performing, exhibitions, photography, or taking part in festivals, the borough is destined to come alive with activities that capture the imagination and encourage its rich talent and enterprise.

Enfield's Mayor, Cllr Jayne Buckland, said, "'Creative Enfield' is a positive approach to culture and the arts recognising the amazing wealth of talent in the borough.

"It explains what the borough has to offer, how the Council and partners can help local people develop their creativity, and how people can enjoy, learn and make their living from the arts and creative enterprise.  As an artist myself, I know that creative activities can make a real difference to young people and provide positive opportunities to achieve and find employment.

"I am truly delighted that we have such a thorough plan that will bring communities and creative individuals together to make Enfield even more attractive and successful in London."

'Creative Enfield' is an accessible plan which has been produced with the active support from the public, particularly Enfield's creative businesses, artists, singers and dancers, drama companies, poets, photographers, film makers, street performers, events planners, storytellers and many more.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, cabinet member for Youth, Leisure, Culture and Olympics, said, " 'Creative Enfield' sets out the way forward for people to get involved in arts and culture either as performers, creators or as audiences.

"We want to see the development of enterprise through arts and cultural activities.

"As we move towards 2012 we want to develop our strong arts base along with our sports and outdoor events for the Cultural Olympiad which gears up to the Games.

"'Creative Enfield' recognises creative businesses and professional artists working in the borough and offers them free business advice, and opportunities to showcase their work - on stage, through exhibitions, in festivals and special events.

"We have high quality local venues including, Millfield Arts Centre, Forty Hall & Estate, the Dugdale Centre and Tourist Information Centre, wonderful parks and open spaces, and lively town centres where community events take place throughout the year.

"Many events in the borough are free and invite local people to join in and have a great time. So I look forward to the exciting times ahead this summer, next summer and in 2012."
