Spurs legend Ossie Ardiles says Thanks A Million’ to Enfield’s volunteers

Published Thursday, 08 July 2010

The tireless work of Enfield’s volunteers was celebrated on Monday 5 July when more than 150 volunteers who have given a hundred hours of their time received recognition for their volunteering from Enfield Council. More than 1600 volunteers have been recognised since the scheme began.

The volunteers each received a certificate and a limited edition pin badge at a reception in the Civic Centre hosted by the Mayor of Enfield, Cllr Jayne Buckland. Ossie Ardiles, representing Tottenham Hotspur Football Club in an Ambassadorial role, was on hand to present the certificates.

Ossie made nearly 300 appearances as a player for the Club between 1978 and 1988, famously experiencing success as part of 1981 FA Cup-winning side. He later returned to White Hart Lane for a one-year spell as manager in 1993, and now plays an active role in Tottenham Hotspur's work off the pitch in the local community.

Speaking about the volunteers' achievements, Cllr Chaudhury Anwar MBE, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Capacity Building in the Third Sector said "The contribution Enfield's dedicated volunteers make to communities and organisations across the borough is incredible.

"We want to thank them publicly for their selfless support and the example they set to others. The volunteers whose work we are celebrating are proof that giving a little of your time can make a big difference."

Volunteering offers the opportunity to give something back to the community as well as making new friends. For many it provides the opportunity to learn, gain valuable experience and skills and for some it may be that first step into helping them back into work.
