BSF cuts are a real blow for our children

Published Thursday, 08 July 2010

Enfield Council is extremely concerned and disappointed that Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education has brought the council’s Building Schools for the Future programme to an abrupt end and allowed just three academy schools to be reviewed.

Council Leader, Doug Taylor, said, "This is a real blow for the children of Enfield. We have a growing primary school population and it is essential that we lay the firm foundations for their future now.

"Our first phase of the programme would have been ready for a start in November 2011. This ambitious programme took a fresh look at schools and the aim was to remodel existing buildings as first class learning centres - and not least, expanding them where necessary.

"We also had plans for the Pupil Referral Unit which needs rebuilding to provide good conditions for pupils who need extra learning and behaviour support.

"BSF in Enfield has been stopped in its final stages. This is a short-sighted, misguided decision from the government and I appeal to the Secretary of State to reconsider this ill-considered action.

"BSF would have brought £101m of investment to the borough of Enfield, not only creating superb, inspiring schools, but also contributing to the local economy providing work for contractors.

"Schools lie at the heart of our communities and are there for all people to use and enjoy. Bringing them all up to high quality standards would have demonstrated how much we value our communities and their children."

Apart from the three academies which are being reviewed by the government, the council will now have to consider how to plan for its school population.

Cllr Taylor warned, "It is a false economy to stint on schools and education. We shall do our best to see that all our children have the best that we can afford, but it was a sad day when the BSF programme was ended."
