Special Turkish / Kurdish youth event makes arresting sight

Published Monday, 21 June 2010

Last week a special event took place at Southgate College which had been organised jointly by Enfield Council Scrutiny Team and the police.

Aimed at Turkish / Kurdish teenagers, who are traditionally hard to reach, the day looked at the different ways that young people can influence democracy and get involved in decision making.

It also involved an armed police demonstration by CO19, and an explanation of how police stop and search people on the street.

The event featured speakers Rob Leak, Chief Executive of Enfield Council and The Borough Commander Chief Superintendent Dave Tucker from the Metropolitan Police.

Cllr Ahmet Oykener, Cabinet Member for Housing & Area Improvements said "I was pleased to see teenagers from the Turkish and Kurdish community involved in an event such as this.

"The day showed both sides of the coin and said that young people sometimes try to get kudos the wrong way, using weapons, and how this can lead to being stopped and searched by the police.

"But then the event gave them guidance on the right way to get their voices heard and how to influence society. By getting involved in democracy and their local council."
