Bravissimo – opera wows Enfield schools

Published Monday, 21 June 2010

In the final year of Enfield’s live opera project performed by the Pavilion Opera Education Trust, four Enfield primary schools are hosting live opera performances of Donnizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor specially adapted for nine and ten year olds.

This exciting project has been a resounding success over the past five years introducing children to an art form that offers drama, music, live theatre, opportunities to develop art and a new way to expand their learning.

Professional pianists and singers perform the opera in costume and in the original language - in this year's performances in Italian.

Kim Hember, manager of Enfield Arts Support Service, said, "Over 5000 primary school children have experienced the joy of a live opera performance through this project over the last six years. In this final year 800 children from 12 primary schools will be seeing the opera at one of the host schools.

"All the children will be familiar with the opera story since they will have learned about it in their school lessons and written their own stories and produced art work relating to it. This background helps them to fully appreciate the performances and gives them an insight into this art form."

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for education and children's services, said, "Opera is a complex and exciting art form. By giving our children this experience in a meaningful way it is something that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and they will continue to enjoy."
