Self-service improves library efficiency

Published Tuesday, 28 July 2015

All Enfield libraries are being upgraded and equipped with the latest self- service technology enabling users to issue and return a range of library books and other loan materials themselves.

The final phase of works starts on 17 August at four libraries: Edmonton Green, Oakwood, Winchmore Hill and Southgate Circus. While most of the libraries have already had the technology installed on days when they are closed, four sites require a short period of closure to undertake the works.

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services, Protection & Libraries, said: “Self-service works well in the libraries where it is already installed.  Not only does it speed up the time it takes to check out items and prevent queues, but it also frees up time for staff to help users find books, deal with IT enquiries, advise on services and check stock.

“The library closures have been carefully planned to cause the minimum disruption to services and staff will be on hand when the libraries re-open to explain how to operate the new technology.”

Edmonton Green Library – closes Monday 17 – Friday 21 August reopening as normal from Saturday 22 August.

Oakwood Library – closes Monday 24 – Wednesday 26 August reopening as normal from Thursday 27 August.

Winchmore Hill Library - closes Wednesday 2 – Friday 4 September reopening as normal from Saturday 5 September

Southgate Circus Library - closes Monday 7 - Wednesday 9 September

Cllr Orhan added: “We have taken care to plan these works only closing on days as necessary and using days when the libraries are not open to the public. We have also ensured that closures take place on days that do not have any special activity planned.”
