How the power of sport can boost your mind

Published Monday, 27 July 2015

Don’t underestimate the power of sport – it’s not only good for the body, it can be a huge boost for the mind.

That’s why Enfield Council have got behind a programme ‘Get Set to Go’, backed by Sport England and the National Lottery, which will support 75,000 people with mental health problems to join sports clubs, go to the gym or take up a new sport.

So what are the health benefits of sport for the mind? They include:

- Reduced anxiety and happier moods
- Reduced feelings of stress
- Clearer thinking
- A greater sense of calm
- Increased self-esteem
- Reduced risk of depression.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Sport, Cllr Nneka Keazor, said: “People with mental health problems do want to participate in sport; however feelings of low self-confidence, exhaustion, or fear of crowded spaces may prevent them from getting started.

“We want more people with mental health problems to be able to enjoy exercising. This new programme will help people to better look after their physical and mental health through sport.”
