Sports area inspires school games

A new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) next to the playing field at Houndsfield School in Edmonton has just been completed.

Children, teachers and parents are celebrating with two charity football tournaments to support their partner school in Sierra Leone.

The children’s tournament is from 1pm – 3pm followed by an adult event from 4pm – 6pm.

Located just off the main school playing field, the MUGA is a welcome addition to the school’s new expanded facilities which were part of Enfield Council’s primary school expansion programme.

This included a new building, the Park Suite, containing six new classrooms, a large hall and various group rooms. It is adjacent to the MUGA.

Approximately 700 pupils attend the school and they will be using the area for a variety of games: football, rugby, table tennis, athletics, netball and all outdoor PE activities.

Headteacher, Kate Holland, said, “This area is the final part of our school expansion and it is a great facility for local children not just during school time but for after school clubs too.

“The council contributed over £234,000 for the MUGA and the school also contributed £30,000. It is a vital asset for our children where they can exercise, develop a keen interest in sport, get plenty of fresh air and learn something about team work.

“We are keen to develop a strong sports programme that will give all our children confidence and enjoyment as well as the health benefits from physical activity.”

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services & Protection, said, “The MUGA is the perfect addition to the school expansion. It will give the children improved health; opportunities to take part in exciting sports; and to learn how to improve physical skills. I am delighted that it will be enjoyed by so many young people.”

The school also plans to use the MUGA for outdoor events, local tournaments and encouraging community and charitable activities.
