Special ceremony honours volunteers

Published Thursday, 11 June 2015

A special ceremony was held at Enfield Civic Centre at the end of March to encourage and recognise Enfield residents who give up a minimum of 100 hours of their time to good causes. With special guest Gary Mabbutt MBE from Spurs FC, it raised the importance and profile of the borough’s volunteers.

The scheme is a fantastic way of recognising the efforts and achievements of those who selflessly dedicate their time and abilities to helping others. Enfield Council hosts regular Civic receptions in recognition of their good work and to celebrate their valuable contribution to the community. People living outside Enfield can also join the scheme if they volunteer within the borough.

On the 26 March over two hundred volunteers of all ages were recognised for 100 hours or more of volunteering during the year. They were awarded with a certificate and a limited edition pin badge as a token of the Council’s appreciation and acknowledgement of the work that they do.

Two volunteers were highlighted for their particular dedication. Bill Bossom from Brodie Road, EN2 was nominated by over 50 residents and visitors for his work in creating a beautiful display garden in the Enfield in Bloom competitions for all to enjoy. In September 2012 Bill had a serious fall which made him give up his bowls coaching and umpiring, and so his commitment to volunteering is particularly important.

Resident Stanley Pitch also received an award for his voluntary work with the Metropolitan Police. Stanley is 88 years young and volunteers at the station twice a week as well as giving his time to other organisations.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Organisations and Culture, Cllr Yasemin Brett, said: “I would personally like to thank each and every one of these wonderful people who were recognised at our 100 hours awards ceremony.

“Each and every one of the recipients of 100 hours certificates has made a huge contribution to Enfield and we are truly grateful for the commitment, dedication and selflessness they have shown in helping others less fortunate than themselves.”
