Headteacher, Martin Lavelle and staff at Southgate School have been selected for a top role supporting schools in challenging circumstances.

Martin is one of 137 headteachers to be appointed to the role of National Leader of Education in the latest recruitment round.

National Leaders of Education along with staff in their school - designated a National Support School - use their success and professionalism to provide additional leadership capability in other schools.

They are deployed to suit the needs of each school needing support or to those in transition to federation or academy status.

The type of support provided is flexible and can often involve National Leader of Education's becoming executive headteacher. They also have responsibility for bringing on the next generation of National Leader of Educations and National Support Schools.

Martin Lavelle, Headteacher of Southgate School said:  “I’m delighted to have been appointed to such a role both on a personal level and because it means that Southgate School can continue its outreach work alongside other members of the Enfield Schools Teaching Alliance. It is a real vote of confidence to the superb staff who work at our school.’

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, Enfield Council’s Cabinet member for Children’s Services, Schools & Protection said, “Congratulations to Martin and the staff at Southgate School. His leadership will bring new ideas and support to schools that need some help. This is good news for our community of schools that will raise standards in all aspects of education.”
