Enfield Council is offering free car seat checks for parents at a variety of shops to ensure they have the correct child restraints for their child and vehicle.

The sessions run between 10am and 2pm and start at Halfords at 3 Great Cambridge Road, Enfield, on Wednesday 18 February and will continue throughout the year.

Other sessions will be at:

Thursday 2 April: Co-op, 654-658 Hertford Road, Enfield,
Friday 12 June: Mothercare, Ravenside Retail Park, Angel Road, Edmonton
Monday 3 August: Southbury Leisure Centre, 192 Southbury Road, Enfield
Tuesday 27 October: Asda, 130 Chase Side, Southgate
Monday 21 December: Tesco, 288 High Street, Enfield

The law states that all children under 135 cm, or roughly 4ft 5in, tall must use the proper child seat when travelling by car, but research by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, suggests four out of every five child seats are fitted incorrectly.

This events will give new and prospective parents and carers the chance to check they have the correct seat for their child and car and make sure it is fitted correctly.

Parents and carers who already have a car seat of their own can also ask for a demonstration in how to fit it properly or they can try out one of the team's car seats before they buy a seat themselves.

Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety, Cllr Chris Bond, said: "This is a great free initiative which will help improve the safety of children travelling in cars by helping to ensure parents are aware of the correct way of installing their child's car seats.

"We are very grateful for the support of our retailers who have been really supportive of this initiative. Enfield Council is committed to reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads and this scheme will help us achieve that aim."
