Schools celebrate travel plan accreditation

Published Thursday, 04 December 2014

Schools across Enfield have seen their efforts to encourage safer travel and increase cycling rates accredited by Transport for London.

The accreditation is part of the STARS (Sustainable Travel: Active, Responsible, Safe) Schools Initiative and 76 schools in Enfield have seen their travel plans accredited under the scheme.

Transport for London's (TfL) STARS programme, was launched in 2007 to encourage children, parents and teachers to adopt more sustainable and safe ways of travelling to school. Schools are judged on the number of initiatives delivered and their success in changing travel behaviour with Bronze, Silver and Gold accreditation levels.

In Enfield 76 schools are accredited under TfL’s award scheme – 44 at sustainable level (Bronze), 20 at higher level (Silver) and an impressive 15 at outstanding level (Gold).

West Lea School has already received a ‘School of the Region’ award from in recognition of its work in establishing a Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) scheme empowering young people to run projects that have a positive effect on fellow pupil’s travel behaviour. Through the scheme West Lea’s students have helped overcome parents’ concerns around cycling safely.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services and Protection,  Cllr Ayfer Orhan, said: “We are committed to making travel in Enfield an enjoyable, healthy and safe experience for our pupils.  Our schools have worked really hard to find safe, and environmentally friendly ways for pupils to get to and from school, which contributes to the wider objectives of our Enfield 2020 Sustainability Programme by improving air quality and the health of our residents.

“Walking or cycling to school is good exercise, meaning young people meet their friends on the way to school and socialise with them, plus it reduces the number of cars on the roads during the rush hour.

“I’m delighted so many schools have been accredited by Transport for London for their school travel plans, and I’m looking forward to the day when every school in Enfield is accredited in this way.”
