Unity Hub glows with pride

Published Friday, 19 September 2014

‘Unity Hub at Craig Park’ in Edmonton, not only glows in the dark, but is now glowing with the pride of Enfield Council, having won a prestigious award from the Architects Journal in the Civic and Community category at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 17 September.

The award recognises the unique idea of incorporating some of the original structure of the old Craig Park Youth Centre within a new building.

Cllr Rohini Simbodyal, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport, Youth and Public Health, said, “This award, made by the Architects Journal is particularly pleasing since this is the leading national architectural magazine – it is a much coveted seal of approval – and really encouraging as the young people associated with the centre played a major role in the development of the design.

“They worked enthusiastically alongside the Curl la Tourelle Architect’s professional team to ensure they got a truly inspirational building that offers a wide range of community activities.”

At this popular centre local young people enjoy friendship, learn new skills, contribute to a programme of exciting activities, gain qualifications in youth leadership and manage the centre.

Excellent facilities designed by young people, include a first class media suite, recording studio, climbing cave, gym and dance studio. There are outdoor sports facilities, cycling courses and training in renovating and repairing bikes.

Andrew Lloyd from Curl la Tourelle Architects, said, “This was a great opportunity to experiment with exciting materials and design a building that came from the ideas of young people. It is a light airy building which responds to changes in the light with a welcoming colourful glow attracting young people.”

The government's My Place fund provided £3.5 million to develop the "Unity Hub at Craig Park" in 2009.
