‘Laugh’ don’t smoke for Stoptober’

Published Thursday, 28 August 2014

Stoptober, the nation’s biggest mass participation stop smoking challenge is in its 3rd year this October with the theme of humour.

Fewer and fewer people are smoking, and to encourage smokers to kick the habit, those that attend two smoking cessation service sessions will receive free tickets to a special, comedy night at the Dugdale Centre in Enfield.

People who would like support to stop smoking will be signed up for the sessions throughout September including at an event on 12 September at Palace Gardens Shopping Centre (outside M&S) where there will be free handouts and entertainment including football skills, a magician and a balloon sculpturer.

Cllr Rohini Simbodyal, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport, Youth and Public Health, who will be supporting the event said “Smoking is a serious health concern and the greatest preventable cause of death and disability in the borough.

“There are lots of ways that Enfield’s Stop Smoking service can help our residents quit, with different replacement therapies, coping tools and moral support, and all of this is free!
“I would urge everyone who is thinking about stopping smoking to give it a go for Stoptober, and seek help because  research shows you are four times more likely to quit with this extra support than stopping on your own."

If you stop smoking this October using Enfield Council’s Stop Smoking Service, and have attended a minimum of two sessions you will be entitled to two free tickets to our fantastic comedy show ‘Laugh don’t Smoke’ at the Dugdale.

Did you know?
The average smoker has 13 cigarettes a day, which equates to 364 cigarettes every 4 weeks. Stoptober would have saved them £141 each over 4 weeks, and if they remain Smokefree, they could save £423 by Christmas and £1,696 in a year.

With the average cigarette taking approximately 4 minutes to smoke, this Stoptober could have saved the average smoker over 24 hours by not smoking.

Stoptober 2014 starts on Wednesday 1 October and runs for 28 days. For more information and to sign up visit Stoptober or call 0800 652 8405 to be put through to your local stop smoking service.
