Enfield speaks 'Louder than Words'

Enfield Council’s Operational Services Centre announced this week that it had passed the ‘Louder than Words’ accreditation for this year. This award is a nationally recognised best practice charter for organisations striving to offer excellent levels of service and accessibility for customers and employees who are deaf or have a hearing loss.

The charter is made up of ten quality standards used to determine the accessibility of information for staff, visitors and service users.

To gain accreditation an organisation should have:
• mandatory equality training for all staff, plus deaf awareness training and British Sign Language training;
• comprehensive loop system coverage in their buildings;
• having policies and procedures in place to support staff who are deaf or have a hearing loss;
• having an active Disability Staff Network; and
• ensuring staff are aware of different types of communication support

Cllr Achilleas Georgiou, Deputy Leader of Enfield Council said “Enfield Council is the champion of the most vulnerable in our society.

“Those who are deaf or who have hearing loss often need extra help to communicate, and this is why we have a deaf signer in the Civic Centre, free for anyone to use on the first Wednesday of every month between 9am and 4pm.

“We have also uploaded a number of ‘how to’ videos on our website explaining visually about how to understand various common letters received from the council, such as council tax demands. This helps people who may have issues with face to face and telephone communications find out quickly and easily what they need to know in an accessible way.

“To receive the Louder than Words accreditation is fantastic news, and is testament to the hard work of all of our Operational Services Centre staff.”
