Employment and skills strategy launched

A strategy designed to reduce unemployment and improve the skill level of workers in Enfield has been unveiled by Enfield Council.

Enfield Council’s Employment and Skills Strategy aims to help people find jobs, enable businesses in the borough to recruit local residents, help people increase their skills and qualifications and promote inward investment in the borough to create more job opportunities.
 
The strategy will complement and support the borough’s agreement with Job Centre Plus to tackle worklessness and a key part of this will deliver a renewed push to encourage local businesses to take on apprentices and more local residents to take up apprenticeship opportunities.
 
The council aims to get 2,000 people into new apprenticeships each year.
 
The agreement sees the organisations signing up to tackle unemployment in the borough by working more closely with local employers, colleges, and other organisations, establishing joint working protocols and launching collaborative initiatives to break down the barriers people face, such as lack of skills and affordable childcare, when trying to get a job.
 
Enfield Council Leader, Cllr Doug Taylor, said: “Well trained, motivated and dedicated staff are the lifeblood of any organisation and this strategy aims to ensure that we create the right conditions to produce a high class workforce to enable our businesses to deal with the challenges of the 21st century.
 
“We need to match our residents’ skills to the needs of businesses in our borough so we can reduce unemployment, tackle deprivation and lift people out of poverty. We are a business-friendly council and there is nothing more business – or community- friendly than helping companies to find first class employees which ultimately improves their profitability and gets people into work and out of poverty.
 
Enfield Council's Cabinet Member for Business and Regeneration, Cllr Del Goddard, said: ”There is tremendous potential to get our residents into work because of the enormous amount of regeneration work being done across Enfield. We need to make sure we use these project as an opportunity to get people into good quality permanent employment.”
 
Employers in Enfield say that new jobs are likely to be required in food manufacturing, wholesale, logistics, construction, green industries, retro-fitting and the low carbon sector. Projects launched by Enfield Council to provide jobs in these sectors include the Garden Enfield project which aims to create 1,200 jobs and the Enfield 2020 campaign which will provide jobs across green industries.

Regeneration schemes in the borough, including the £1.5 billion Meridian Water development, will create at least 3,000 more roles in retail, construction, leisure and industry by 2017 and further growth areas in Enfield are expected to be financial and business services, transport and logistics and manufacturing.
