Mums LOVE new baby friendly campaign

Published Thursday, 20 February 2014

A local shop helped celebrate a continued successful campaign, launched by Enfield Council, which encourages mums to breastfeed their babies whilst out and about.

Breastfeeding friendly

Cllr Christine Hamilton, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing and Public Health visited local shop ‘Love 13’ this week, which is the latest business to sign up to the council’s ‘breastfeeding friendly’ drive.

So far 66 shops and companies have signed up to the campaign which has seen local businesses display stickers in their windows advertising that breastfeeding mothers and their babies are very welcome in their premises.

Running until 4 March the campaign highlights the advantages of breastfeeding for babies, a handy leaflet has also been produced to highlight the benefits for mums and businesses signing up to the scheme. Information will also be available on how to feed your baby and the help that is available should you need it.

There are many benefits of breastfeeding your baby:
• Breast milk is the only natural food designed for your baby;
• Breastfeeding protects your baby from infections and diseases;
• Breast milk provides health benefits for your baby;
• Breastfeeding provides health benefits for mum;
• It’s free;
• It’s available whenever and wherever your baby needs a feed;
• It’s the right temperature;
• It can build a strong physical and emotional bond between mother and baby.

The campaign is also looking to sign up more local businesses to welcome breastfeeding mothers, all the businesses which display the special sticker are saying that they are ‘breastfeeding friendly’ and that mums and their babies are welcome in their premises.

Any company which displays the sticker agrees that:
• Mums can breastfeed in all areas of their business that are open to the public;
• A breastfeeding mum will not be asked to move to another area or stop breastfeeding;
• Mums will never be asked to use the toilets for feeding;
• All staff members are made aware that your business is a member of the scheme.

Cllr Christine Hamilton, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing and Public Health said “I was delighted to visit Love 13 and see their wonderful community of mums and babies and how welcoming the shop is.

“Breastfeeding is the very best way to feed your baby, and we want to ensure that women feel comfortable going into shops and businesses in Enfield and feeding their babies in public.

“I would urge every business in Enfield to join the scheme as it is great for business and good news for mums and babies”

Denni King, Owner of Love 13 said “Many of the people who come into the shop are mums, often with children. We are proud to sign up to this scheme as we want anyone who comes into our business to feel comfortable and at ease.

“It’s a great scheme and we hope that many more businesses sign up to it.”
