Glittering gold service for youth

Published Wednesday, 30 November 2011

Over the past three years Enfield Council’s Youth Support Service has steadily built its reputation as one of the best and most successful in the country

And now the service has been recognised with a gold level award from the London Youth Quality Mark organisation that supports youth services across London with training, good practice ideas, and approving services.

Staff and young people from Enfield’s youth centres: Craig Park and Croyland in Edmonton; Ponders End Centre, Alan Pullinger in Southgate and Enfield Island Village are celebrating their outstanding success with a special celebration and award evening.

Cllr Bambos Charalambous, Enfield Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and youth, said, “The range of activities and opportunities for young people at our youth centres is staggering.

“Young people can enjoy music and dance, computers, outdoor activities, stretch themselves with challenging tasks on Duke of Edinburgh award schemes and take youth leadership courses.

“Volunteering, contributing to the running of their centres, decision making; and learning new skills are all part of the exciting programmes.

“Work continues at Craig Park refurbishing the building to a design and concept that young people drew up which won over £3 million pounds to improve it.

“The Youth Support Service is going from strength to strength and it is down to the hard work and enthusiasm of all those who take part in it – that’s staff and young people.”

Gary Hartin, head of quality standards at London Youth added, “Achieving the gold standard is not easy, but Enfield’s service has simply shone and is truly a centre of excellence.

“Year on year the service has shown ambition for young people, determination for them to succeed and gained their enthusiasm to see projects through. This award is thoroughly well-deserved.”
