Green jobs go on show

Published Monday, 18 February 2013

New jobs and careers are springing up as environmental technology industries develop.

Grasping this opportunity, Enfield Council and Barnet & Southgate College are presenting a unique environmental technology fair to promote this sector to young people and the wider business community.

Cllr Alan Sitkin, who chairs Enfield Council’s Sustainability Scrutiny Panel, said, “People don’t realise that there are important jobs in this field which are developing rapidly. Now is the time for young people to seize the new ideas on offer.

“We need builders, plumbers, and craftsmen who know how to handle and fit the new materials being used in solar panels, piping and heating in house building and we also need people to be skilled in making older buildings more energy efficient.

“These emerging industries not only provide jobs but also in terms of sustainability it means that they will help us to use less energy, be safer, help the economy and cut down on waste.

"This fair is engaging in so many ways and with so many educators and companies on hand to show vocational training possibilities it will inspire many young people to consider some exciting new careers"

This fair is supported by major utilities and companies who will be offering advice on careers and demonstrating some of their developments.

Local businesses will be able to find out how they can save energy and money by looking after the environment.

Cllr Sitkin summed up, “We cannot underestimate the benefits that come with caring for the environment and I am confident that demand for new skills will keep on growing.”
