Enfield Food Strategy, Every Bite Matters

Whether you 'eat to live' or 'live to eat', everyone has a connection with food. The way we produce, transport, shop for, cook, eat and dispose of our food has an impact on so many things - the environment, our health and the local economy. The Council's Food Strategy aims to increase the production and consumption of healthy, sustainable food in Enfield.

Why Enfield is developing a Food Strategy

Enfield is home to a thriving food sector. Small scale producers, wholesalers and large, nationally known food producers have factories and distribution centres here, which together with the farms and restaurants across the borough provide thousands of jobs for local people. The Food Strategy will strengthen existing networks to increase business between local suppliers, local restaurants and national buyers.

As one of London's greenest boroughs, Enfield is rich in greenbelt farmland, allotment sites and growing spaces. The Food Strategy will involve local communities in a range of initiatives, encouraging people to 'grow their own', and supporting the development of new growing spaces.

The Food Strategy will encourage healthier eating and help to address food-related health inequalities caused by a poor diet. Schools have a vital role to play in getting children into healthy eating habits at an early age. Food also plays a part in celebrating the cultural diversity of Enfield's communities.

It's also important to acknowledge the environmental impact of the food we eat, by reducing food waste, buying locally and in season and promoting wildlife friendly practices in an effort to tackle climate change.

The vision is supported by the aims and objectives:

• Establish, maintain and protect community food-growing spaces.
• Expand and maintain a thriving local food economy.
• Support business and skills development in the food sector.
• Encourage a more sustainable diet as part of a healthier lifestyle.
• Promote food production and consumption in a way that is respectful of our natural environment.

The Enfield Strategic Partnership has endorsed and adopted the Enfield Food Strategy.
