The Sir Jules Thorn I.T. Centre, within Ordnance Road Library,
is fully accessible and aims to target local needs. 
It offers free one to one computer training, with a dedicated trainer,
for people with sensory impairments - Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing,
blind and partially sighted.  The trainer is learning British Sign Language
and an interpreter can be provided if needed.

There are 12-week courses for people who would like to learn about writing letters and other documents in Word, emailing and the Internet.  Other Microsoft packages, such as Excel and Access, can also be taught.  Programmes are tailored to meet individual needs. 

The following equipment is available:
 

Computers with large screens, large print keyboards and trackball
Screen reading software - Jaws
Magnification software, with optional speech - ZoomText
Internet and email facilities
Text to Braille translator - Duxbury; and a Braille embosser
Ruby Open Book:  printed word reading machine
MyReader for enlarging handwritten and printed text. 
Enjoy reading again as pages are captured and displayed as a column of    
words, row of words or one word at a time.
 

The courses must be pre-booked with the trainer.
