Citizenship Ceremonies and Nationality Checking Service

MG 7436 1

Citizenship ceremonies are provided for local people who have had their application for British Nationality accepted by the Home Office.

Before they can receive their naturalisation certificate, new citizens successfully attaining British Citizenship must swear or affirm an oath of allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and pledge their loyalty to the United Kingdom.

  • How do I apply for British Citizenship?

You must have been accepted by the Home Office for British Nationality. Please also see the page Nationality Checking Service for more details.

You can download an application form from the Home Office website.

  • How do I book my Citizenship Ceremony?

Please telephone customer services on 020 8379 5172. Phone lines are open on Monday - Friday 8am - 6pm.

Please have your Home Office Invitation Letter with you when you call. The Citizenship Officer will ask you a series of questions to complete your booking.

You will be asked to give the following information:

    • The security numbers given on your Invitation Letter
    • Your Home Office reference number
    • Your name, address and phone number
    • Details of any other family members also attaining Citizenship with you
    • Names of your guests that you wish to bring to your ceremony - so that an invitation card can be sent; and
    • The type of Allegiance you wish to take.
  • Do I need to bring any documents to the Ceremony?

On the day of your ceremony you must bring with you:

    • Photographic ID, such as a passport, travel document or driving licence.
    • Your original Invitation Letter from the Home Office
  • What happens if I forget my documents?

If you forget to bring your documents, you will be refused entry. You can arrange to attend a ceremony at a later date.

Guests must remember to bring their invitation card.

  • When can I book my Ceremony?

You can book your appointment for a ceremony as soon as you receive your Home Office invitation letter. The Home Office asks that you contact us within 21 days from receipt of their letter, but don't worry as you can still book your ceremony after this time.
