Severe Weather and Flooding

Snow

Snow, ice and the cold can affect everyone and it is important to prepare for the winter months.

For those living in rurual areas, which are more likely to be affected by heavy snow and ice, being prepared is essential. Those living in built up areas, although less likely to be as severely affected still need to take precautions.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What if I can't leave my house?
  • What if people can't get to me?
  • What if I am stuck in my car?
  • What if my childs schools has closed?

Would you know what to do or be prepared for any of these situations?

Think about these points:

  • Have a good pair of boots that you can wear instead of leather soled shoes or trainers as they will provide you with more grip (and warmth) in icy/snowy conditions
  • To help prevent ice and snow building up on pavements and driveways, you can use any form of salt but this must be put down before it snows or freezing temperatures are reached to be effective. You don't have use lots but the more the area gets walked on, the better the effect.
  • Pay attention to the weather forecasts and warnings
  • Cat litter works as a form of grit
  • Keep a shovel inside your house
  • Check on your neighbour and help them, especially if you know they may be vulnerable at this time of the year
  • If you have school aged children, ensure that you have a plan in place should their school close due to the weather. Could they stay with a family member or a school friend who has a parent at home?
