Abnormal loads
A company that plans to move an abnormal load (e.g. where the gross weight exceeds 44 tonnes) must:
- Notify the police or local authority and get approval; and
- Give two days' notice of the proposed route using the agreed notification form.
The company must indemnify the council for each move; this is normally by annual block insurance.
Abnormal loads are defined in The Motor (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order 2003. They are usually vehicles that have:
- A gross weight of more than 44 tonnes; or
- Axles load of more that 11.5 tonnes; or
- A width of more than three metres; or
- A length of more than 18.75 metres long.
Besides the council, the police and other highway and bridge authorities in charge of the route must be informed about the routes these vehicles take so that they can check for:
- Low bridges
- Weight limits on bridges
- Underground structures
- Width restrictions
- Road closures
- Road works
- One-way systems
