Housing and Council Tax Benefits overpayments
Benefit overpayments
Our Revenues and Benefits Service has a duty to safeguard public funds and will normally seek to recover any Benefit overpayments that occur.
An overpayment is recoverable from either the person who has caused the overpayment, or the person who has received the benefit.
To avoid overpayments, you must report all changes to the Benefit Service as soon as they occur.
Recovery of overpayments
If benefit is still being paid, we will reduce your benefit by the weekly amount shown in the table below. There is a higher rate of payback per week for overpayments resulting from fraud.
| Claimant Type | Weekly Clawback Rate | Weekly (FRAUD) Clawback Rate |
| Non-working claimant | £10.65/week | £17.75 |
| Working claimant (single) | £13.15/week | £20.25 |
| Working claimant (couple) | £15.65/week | £22.75 |
| Working claimant (claimant or partner is entitled to disability premium or carer premium) | £20.65/week | £27.75 |
| Working claimant (single parent) | £23.15/week | £30.25 |
