What options do I have for clearing my mortgage arrears?
Making a charity application
Your first step should be to make contact with your lender; you should do this as soon as you know you will have problems making regular payments.
The options outlined here may also help you reduce your future mortgage costs.
Always consider this as an option if you are on a limited income. Most local reference libraries have the book 'A Guide to Grants for Individuals in
Need' in stock. Consult this and try to match yourself to charities whose criteria you meet. Some have a policy to not provide grants for arrears, but your circumstances (e.g. you recently became disabled) may outweigh this.
Many occupational/service charities do not exclude payments for arrears, so if you did a particular job or used to be in one of the services, apply to these organisations. If this contact needs to be made via a Social Worker/Welfare Rights Unit/ Citizens' Advice Bureau, then you need to be referred by them. Contact one of the above and make an appointment.
