Criminal Record Checks

Disclosure applications replace the previous Police Check system used by most local authorities (LAs) and come under the Department of Health's Criminal Record Bureau (CRB), not the LA.

You need to attend this office in person and produce identification documentation. This will then be sent with your application to the CRB for checking. The results will be sent to the applicant and the LA separately. Once this information is received, a decision will be made whether to issue a chaperone licence.

Child

Under legislation, a young person is a child until they are no longer of compulsory education age.

Compulsory education

A young person is still of compulsory school age until the last Friday in June of the school year when they reach the age of 16.

A school year lasts from 1 September to 31 August.

Broadcast performances

This refers to performances - in films and videos, and on television - that will be broadcasted.

Non-broadcast performances

This refers to performances that will not be broadcasted, such as theatre, modelling and sport (activities).

Child protection

If there are serious child protection issues, don't wait. Contact the police and social care immediately and remove the child from the situation. The LA will provide you with details about Child Protection Procedures when you apply.

Record sheets

Production companies are required to log certain activities during a performance (e.g. arrival and departure times at the place of the performance).

In many cases, this task is designated for the chaperone to complete; the chaperone has to complete and submit the forms to the company at the end of each day. But the legal responsibility for record-keeping is still with the Licence Holder.

Renewal

A chaperone needs to re-apply for their licence every year by completing a renewal application form and providing two photographs. CRB checks are renewed every three years.
